The Art & History of the Silversmith

The creativity and skill of the Silversmith has made Britain a world leader in modern silver. Broadway Silver was founded by William Benjamin Broadway, during the reign of Queen Victoria. William was a highly skilled die-sinker, someone who engraves dies used to stamp designs on coins or medals.

Broadway Silversmiths have built up an impressive range of fine quality Sterling Silver products. They turn silver sheet metal into hollow ware. The range of products would have included dishes, bowls, porringers, cups, candlesticks, vases, ewers, urns, flatware, church plate or sculpture and jewellery.

The techniques, training, history, and guilds for Silversmith and Goldsmiths are broadly similar. The scale of objects created may vary. It would be true to say that most goldsmiths work in silver, but the reverse may not be true.
